Mad River Glen 2-Dimensional Trail Map

More Information about the Maps

These maps show the Mad River trail system, lifts, streams, and buildings in their planimetrically correct two-dimensional locations. In other words, they show the mountain directly from above without distortion, however the result is steep areas are rendered short compared to flatter areas.

The source of trails, lifts, and buildings are 1:5000 Vermont April 1979 orthophotographs (1 inch = 416 feet); areas on these black-and-white images which were unclear were filled in using personal knowledge. These are available in paper and digital formats from the Vermont Mapping Program. Imagery for 1995 is now available.

The map data were automated and generated using geographic information system (GIS) software. This map database management software permits combination of data from varied map sources. For these maps, the contours came from USGS digital elevation models, streams came from both 1:24000 USGS topographic maps and 1:5000 orthophotos, and the property boundaries came from Town of Fayston tax map data.

Other Notes: Property lines shown are approximate; included is the subdivision boundary created by Mrs. Pratt when the Cooperative purchased the mountain exclusive of the Twentieth Hole. This subdivision boundary was automated using global positioning system technology. The interval of the elevation contour lines is 50 feet. The contours give the general feel of topography, but do not show cliff bands and the like because they were generated from a 30 X 30 meter point elevation model. The Long Trail is very approximate as the whims of weather cause its relocation with some frequency.
