The Mad River Glen Single Chair was built by American Wire and Cable in 1947. The gasoline-powered lift with its innovative midstation, and 2000-foot vertical drop, was considered an engineering marvel in its time. The date of this early winter post card is not known, however the presence of logging debris on the Chute and the absence of young trees along the trail edges indicate that the card dates to the lift's first years.
Today the Single Chair is powered by a diesel engine and has many rebuilt parts, including many chairs, but it still transports skiers to the top of Stark Mountain as it did in the 1940's. Each year the lift undergoes thorough maintenance by Cooperative staff, and it passes the rigorous tests of the State of Vermont Tramway Division, which is testament to the lift's design and construction. The Foundation will support the Cooperative's efforts to preserve this working landmark in American skiing history.
