Art for MRG Skiers
Mad River Glen and Stark Mountain Foundation have been cooking up ways to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cooperative. As ideas were coming together—including the sold-out bash on March 28th—an idea for community poster art bubbled up. Shepard Fairey's design studio, Studio Number One, is famous for that kind of work, so we reached out.
They listened to our story, and then got to work to meet the unique challenge that we set out for them—create a timeless artifact that captures both the independence of the people and the durable bond of the cooperative.
They delivered a work that shows MRG's most iconic symbol, the Single Chair, as the infinite loop of chairs that hang off the haul rope, carrying skiers up through the elevations of the mountain, together, to the top.
We also made sure that they made it snowy and sunny. As an enduring experiment in community ownership, with so much to celebrate about the past, we also have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future, starting with the durability and dedication of our community.

Why it matters
Not only is the Cooperative going strong at 30 years[1], there’s an argument to be made that we’re going stronger than ever.
In the run up to 30, we...
- Sold out of shares (2,500) and started a waiting list
- Acquired the 19th and 20th holes (1,100 acres)
... and sold out of tickets for the 30th anniversary party at the Basebox!

[1]: 30 years of ownership is no small feat. Consider that our resident icons of New England skiing, Roland Palmedo and Betsy Pratt, each had 23 years of ownership, respectively.
